Jalopnik ranked the Lincoln MKZ as the number 3 most overpriced car on sale following the Cadillac Escalade ($63.745) and the Aston Martin Cygnet ($45,595.)

The Lincoln MKZ starts at $35,925, and that is a far step up from the Fusion which starts at $21,900. Feel free to argue this point, but the two cars are pretty much the same. This is a common problem with many entry-level luxury sedans, but Lincoln does it particularly well.

Is the Lincoln MKZ over-priced? Is it the Lincoln MKZ in particular, or is this a problem with all entry-level luxury sedans?

6.) Smart Fortwo Passion — $14,890

5.) Porsche Boxster S — $62,100 before options ($100K+ after)

2.) Cadillac Escalade — $63,745

1.) Aston Martin Cygnet — $45,595

I actualy dont feel like the MKZ deserves to be on the list. The price is veyr reasonable. Even as an upscale fusion it is priced correctly. There are many cars on there that are honestly just out of this world overpriced - "why would you buy one you idiot" - kind of thing

Why did the head of Lincoln say that Lincoln was not real luxury? He is right, but that doesn't mean he should say it out loud. Making such a statement immediately lowers the reputation and value of Lincoln's vehicles. He basically admitted that they are over-priced. Some PR person at Ford is not very happy about that statement.

honestly it really depends what you consider luxury. there is no definition of what makes a car a luxury car
Luxury is more of a feeling. You just know if something is luxurious or not. It doesn't have to cost a lot, it doesn't have to have every option. It could, but it doesn't have to. It just needs to be a nice vehicle. I think some type of status is common across all luxurious items though.

This is why they have different classes of luxury. Anyone familiar with cars won't put the luxury of a brand new Mercedes in-line with an Acura. One is entry-level luxury (Acura) and the Mercedes is high-end luxury. Even a brand new HONDA with leather seats and leather on the door panels can be considered luxurious to some, but to some guy driving a 2013 S-Class it's an imitation of luxury.

This is what I mean about luxury being a feeling. It's in the eye of the beholder. One man's luxury is another man's trash.

This makes me feel so good about the 2014 MKZ I just ordered, LOL

The definition of luxury is very subjective. The MKZ looks as good as any car on the road, has a smooth ride (I admit there are better driving cars out there), and the interior design is second to none. I would think anyone who put that list together would think something like the BMW 5-series defines luxury in this segment. Yet look at the mess that is the 5-series instrument panel compared to the MKZ:

It's not even in the same league as the MKZ from an aesthetics standpoint.

I agree. From a design standpoint I prefer the MKZ.

But the 5 series does have better quality materials (the price reflects that)

Congrats on your order! Which trim did you order?
Stock hybrid in Smoked Quartz. About the only upgrade that really appealed to me was the huge sunroof, but I wasn't paying $5,300 to get the package that offers it.

I will admit that the MKZ might not have better materials than the BMW's but I find bmw seats to be very stiff not sure if its the type for the leather they use but man is it ever hard.

Instrument panel looks way better on the MKZ. I think most people agree that the inside of the MKZ is beautiful. It's the exterior that falls flat compared to other luxury cars IMO. Is it terrible? no. But I am not the biggest fan of the grille and a BMW's exterior looks far more appealing for sure.

I think I agree - I'd say right now the front of the BMW is a level higher (most likely because we are all just used to it and BMW hasn't changed the look in decades, so it's iconic) but the tail of the MKZ is much better.

At the same time, as an owner, while exterior is important, 99% of the time, I'm looking at the interior.
