The MKZ was one of 22 vehicles that won the IIHS's Top Safety Pick+ Award this year.

IIHS is using new criteria for the awards this year. TOP SAFETY PICK requires good performance in the Institute's moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests and, for the first time, good or acceptable performance in the small overlap front test introduced in 2012. The same level of performance in those tests, along with at least a basic rating for front crash prevention, is required for the higher accolade, TOP SAFETY PICK+.

So I would say that this is great news. You can say plenty of things about the MKZ, but you can't say that it is unsafe.

My local news ONLY mentioned (3) vehicles and NEVER MENTIONED THE MKZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!! Our little secret, it was ONE of the selling points before we bought a 2014, felt like a safe car & these days way too many distracted drivers. Saw a driver blow through an intersection doing close to 50 MPH on a city street & TEXTING at the same time...

I understand what you mean about distracted drivers. ****, people can't even walk without running into things. I read a news story the other day about a girl who walked off a pier into freezing cold water because she was walking while texting.

Not every car gets this award. I think it really says something about the quality of the MKZ.

Yea the more square design would be better. Right now the hood is very rounded. The nicest cars right now have more angles to them. The back of the MKZ as more of the angular design that is popular today. I don't know what that would do to safety, but I'm sure Ford/Lincoln could figure it out.

angular design is not popular now. Most automakers are transitioning to flowing contours and soft blends. The issue is not being rounded but the fact that the hood rises so severely, not to mention the slab sides. If MKZ had a touch more coke bottle to its shape it would be a different story.

I personally love the design anyways, there is no other car on the road you could confuse the MKZ for..
