So I was just looking at sales figures for MKZ in Canada and in the US and an interesting contrast struck me. Canadians seem to be adopting the new MKZ far better than their American counterparts. Heres the data:

USA

January

2012 1662
2013 453

February

2012 2487
2013 945

March

2012 2932
2013 2360

April

2012 1863
2013 4012

May

2012 2458
2013 3490

June

2012 3137
2013 3180

July

2012 3033
2013 2809

August

2012 3327
2013 3652

September

2012 2575
2013 2874

Canada

January

2012 42
2013 29

February

2012 79
2013 25

March

2012 100
2013 124

April

2012 73
2013 136

May

2012 153
2013 184

June

2012 140
2013 198

July

2012 90
2013 129

August

2012 37
2013 113

September

2012 40
2013 195

In USA YTD sales for MKZ are 23,775 units compared with 2012 sales through Sptember at 23,474 or 1.2% more sales in '13 vs '12.

Compare that to Canadian Numbers where already YTD '13 sales have passed 2012 year end totals. 1133 YTD '13 vs 867 total for 2012. At this point last year the MKZ had seen only 754 sales. YTD MKZ sales in Canada are up 66%.

Heres the link Lincoln MKZ Sales Figures - GOOD CAR BAD CAR feel free to check my math, but the underlying message does not change at all. Canadians like MKZ much better...

the percentage might be better from canada but the numbers dwarf the canadians.

by far.

the market for lincolns in canada is SMALL.
look at the ratio of population US vs Canada. Thats why the percentages can be compared, the Canadian population is essentially a scaled down version of America with similar tastes.

Canada has a much better uptake on the new MKZ than the Americans, that cannot be debated. YTD numbers for Canada have already surpassed all of 2012 sales...

I dont know.. The scales are way too different to make anything of it.

The US sales are like 10x - 15x greater.

so its alot easier for canada to sell a higher number in 2013 compared to 2012 since the number isn't that big in the first place

where as to get the same growth in the US you would have to sell ALOT of MKZs.

USA sold 23,700 MKZ in 2013 compared to 23,400 in 2012

There is a tiny bit of growth. But the 2012 sales weren't terrible. They aren't stellar.

But the 2013 sales are bad either. But not stellar.

2012 and 2013 Canadian sales? Miserable.. Especially if you compare it to the competition in volume (in canada)

I agree with both golfball and zep. It is easier for Canada to raise those percentages because they have to move less vehicles, but the fact that the sales figures are growing that much year to year is a good sign and does show that Canadians are more receptive to the MKZ.

You shouldn't just discount Canada as a place with a small population. The population is similar to the entire state of California, and people seem to care what happens in California.

Do you think that it has something to do with their being more competition in the US?

thats why we use percentages, to even out the scale...

Just went over my OP and found I did in fact conduct my maths incorrectly...

US sales are down 1.2% and Canadian are up 23%

I used the wrong base numbers...

it still doesnt change that it would be impossible for sales to increase by 23% in the US because for them to do that they would have to sell. 5400 more MKZs in 2013. That growth is larger than the entirety of the Canadian MKZ market.

I actually dont see very many Lincolns in Canada to be honest with you. Its not especially popular.

Yea and... There are more people in the states, therefore the scale is higher... Sales didn't increase by 23% in the US, they declined 1.2%... You're getting caught up in the values. Its not about the values its about the uptake of this year vs last year.

Put this American vs Canadian business out of the equation. MKZ sales in Canada are up 23% vs 2012 MKZ sales in Canada and MKZ sales in America are down 1.2% vs MKZ sales in America.

so based on these two numbers its fair to say Canadian citizens who are in the market for a new car like the MKZ better than Americans?

You believe what you want. The MKZ isn't doing as well as Lincoln wanted regardless.

The market is small in Canada for Lincolns. So its not hard for the numbers to change dramatically month to month.

they like the 2013 MKZ better than the 2012 MKZ... don;t go dragging new cars into this. Its simply about uptake of last year vs this year.

Some of that may even be people who were in the market for MKZ last year but decided to wait for the new model this year...

Starting to think that the American market is flooded with many more options, which probably explain why the poor sales are like this
There are not too many options that Americans have that Canadians don't. Off the top of my head US gets the Chevy SS Canada doesn't, but Canada has the TRAX US doesn't get...

i heard about the trax and encore situation, which didn't make sense to me, just like the MKZ and Fusion, a cheaper version of the Encore is needed such as the Trax. Americans don't have a direct alternative.
