"I root for the folks at Lincoln," said Bob Ferguson, Cadillac brand boss, to AutoGuide while at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this week.

The comments are a contrast to what Cadillac design chief Ed Welburn said earlier this year. "They're not a global luxury brand. i don't consider them a competitor," he said in an interview.

Is Cadillac the only true American luxury brand? “Not at all,” said Ferguson. “I’m not dismissive.” He then went on to explain his philosophy. “The better we do as American luxury makers, the more credibility it adds to our offering.”

Ferguson had similar words for Tesla. "When people ask me what I think about Tesla, I tell them; 'Isn't it great to see another American luxury company doing well.'" He went on to say that Lincoln has "difficult cards to play."

Cadillac is doing much better than Lincoln at the moment with more models and sales. The brand also just released the new ATS Coupe. Lincoln has only 5 models, and one of them is the dated Lincoln Navigator.

Lets have a look at the numbers....

Total Lincoln Sales: 81,694
Total Cadillac Sales: 182,543

Lincoln sells 5 models= 16,338 sales/model
cadillac sells 14 models= 13,038 sales/model

So Cadillac can root for Lincoln all they want but their only advantage is having more offerings. Sales/model does not lie...

what production year are those numbers from?
with cars like the ATS i would expect more sales from Cadillac.
So far they seem to hitting a wider range of cars, much more than Lincoln, which is what might make Cadillac feel they're far superior

They are. And technically that should mean they should sell in higher numbers. But they don't.

The Lincoln/Acura segment is a tough tough market.

I feel like they stick with the underdeveloped entry level luxury market because they are afraid of competing in the next segment up with the germans.

Cadillac is like the Mercedes of american luxury cars, so in that case, people are far more likely to buy Cadillac. Lincoln is catching up, but at the rate both brands are going lincoln will be behind for a while.

There must be some benefit to having a strong American luxury car industry. There certainly is an advantage to the Germans right now even though they compete against each other. It might turn out that the trick to beating the Germans isn't one company overtaking them but a whole country's industry surpassing all the Germans.

that would make the american luxury car industry look better, but we all know thats impossible
what are you talking about. Caddy and Lincoln were the pinacle until the 80s. The fuel embargo really hurt them because it meant the big V8s needed to be phased out for fuel efficiency. Through the 60s and 70s Mercedes and BMW meant absolutely nothing here, Audi didnt even exist.

Well I think Cadillac rooting for Lincoln is so they don't come off as jerks from their previous comments but I think even for Cadillac they are fighting the import virus. A lot of people's 1st choice is the Germans and maybe Lexus and then Infiniti and Acura probably in that order. If Lincoln started to steal some import sales, the two classic American luxury car companies overall would have more clout

I'm not sure if I see more Cadillacs around than Acuras. Probably somewhere around the same amount, though the Cadillacs are often newer than the Acuras.

I do think that Cadillac and Lincoln would probably prefer to build up the American luxury industry instead of losing out to imports all the time. I'm sure that in the end they are rooting for their own success before anyone else's though.

If I see a Cadillac it is usually a ATS or CTS. I have seen one ELR around Toronto, which was very surprising to me. Not many people worldwide own an ELR.
I see MKZs every once in a while. I think that I will see more MKCs once they come out.
